Ken Grosvenor started The Grayslake Colts in 1968 with a handful of boys in 6th through 8th grade. They borrowed equipment from Grayslake Community High School and used leather helmets for at least the first year. Home games were played at Jaycee Park, and to pay the referees, they would "pass the hat" at football games. The first cheerleading team started in 1972.
Green and white was adopted as the teams' colors a few years later; and after Grayslake North opened it's doors, black was added to the uniforms to reflect the Colts affiliation with both comunity high schools.
